Thankful
Mary Mary
Columbia/C2/Myrrh
From the July 2000 issue of CCM Magazine.
R&B gospel sister duo Mary Mary is scoring big time with its debut single, "Shackles (Praise You)." It’s a cut bristling with bottom-heavy inventiveness and bittersweet, melodic sensibility, making it one of the most unique songs of the year. The song is a strong representation of the record on which it’s found, Thankful.
On the project Erica and Tina Atkins build on the brilliance of the hit, as well as the work the sisters have done for movie soundtracks (The Prince of Egypt, Dr. Doolittle) and other female artists like Yolanda Adams and 702. Among the songs rivaling the potency of "Shackles" is "I Sings," which includes a rap cameo by B. B. Jay; a Curtis Mayfield oldie, "Good to Me" which provides an occasion for a pairing with soul group Destiny’s Child; and the sunny reworking of "What a Friend."
Mary Mary has created a record not to be missed with Thankful.
